The Mike Henderson Band (from the album If YouThink It's Hot in Here) - Mike Henderson doesn’t wait for an answer to his hint of an album title question of If You Think It’s Hot Here before he launches into some demands of his own with opener “I Wanta Know Why”. The tune rumbles crunchy guitar chords, teasing piano riffs, a solid Blue rhythm and exits on a mighty guitar that utters a twangy honky tonk Blues.
The Mike Henderson Band keep that model in their sights as they barnstorm Blues on If You Think It’s Hot Here, chugging along tracks that keep the wheels greasy on “Send You Back to Georgia”, roaring into “It’s Alright” to shout out an early morning exit and pack “Matchbox” full-to-stuffing of gut bucket rock’n’roll that blurs Blues, Rock and Country in its pedal to the floor forward motion. If You Think It’s Hot Here doesn’t really have to ask….it knows how ‘hot’ it is, the band are just being polite.
Mike Henderson took a break in 2011 after forming The SteelDrivers (2006) with alumni from his days at Dead Reckoning Records days, a label he formed in the late 1990’s with Keiran Kane, Kevin Welch, Harry Stinson and Tammy Rogers, who brought her fiddle into The SteelDrivers. He is a 3-time Grammy nominee and has played with Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Albert King, Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, with songs recorded by Adele, The Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Solomon Burke, and Marty Stuart, recording and touring with Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) in 2000 and 2001. His return with The Mike Henderson Band shows no tentative steps back into music. The title track shudders on a slow, simmering gospel Blues, bounces on a New Orleans Blues crawl behind “Mean Red Spider” and struts out of If You Think It’s Hot Here on a sweet little piano and harmonica jam on “Rock House Blues”.
