A mighty drumbeat kicks off a warning from Devon Allman to “Say Your Prayers”, the lead cut for Ride or Die, his latest release. Over the course of several solo albums, work with dad Gregg and the Allman Brothers Band as well as fronting his own band (Honeytribe) and a member of the Roots supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood, Devon Allman has curated and ushered Blues Rock into a future for the genre. He makes the music part lion, part lamb on Ride or Die as his guitar prowess pushes the power on “Galaxies” and smooths out the groove on “Find Ourselves”. Funky chord chops dance on the edge of the double-edged sword addictions as “Pleasure and Pain”, councils to find the balance while the rhythm continues as the force of Funk offers a safe spot within “Shattered Times”.
Devon Allman recorded Ride or Die in Nashville, co-producing the album with Tom Hambridge (Susan Tedeschi, Buddy Guy, George Thorogood and the Destroyers) who also mixed and mastered the release. The backdrop of music quiets as Devon Allman’s guitar roars on “Watch What You Say” while he spits out the message to own your words. Ride or Die remembers summer sun when guitar strums stroll through “Vancouver” and dreams on a breezy melody for “Butterfly Girl” as Devon Allman advises to ‘listen to your soul’ on “Live from the Heart” and gives a Blues Rock makeover to The Cure’s “A Night Like This”.
