Various Artists (from the album Feel Like Going Home: The Songs of Charlie Rich on Memphis International Records)
Made famous by Charlie Rich, the songs of the legendary Country music man come full circle, returning to the Phillips family fold with the release of Feel Like Going Home: The Songs of Charlie Rich on Memphis International Records. Originally signed by Sam Philips in the late 1950’s, Charlie Rich joined the Sun Records label family, the home of artists that were breaking the mold and setting the standard for future generations on a roster that hosted record releases from Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, and Little Milton among many others. Jeff Philips, third generation in the Philips clan and grandnephew of Sam Philips, makes Feel Like Going Home the first new album release following his purchase of Memphis International. The Songs of Charlie Rich roll out the same piano Charlie used at Sun Studio, the instrument played by Charlie Rich, Jr on the album for his cover of “Break Up”. Feel Like Going Home puts Kevin Connolly behind the title track as the Songs of Charlie Rich receive tributes from Holli Mosley (“Who Will the Next Fool Be”), the Malpass Brothers (“Caught in the Middle”), Preston Shannon (“Easy Money”), Grace Askew with Keith Sykes (“Everything I Do is Wrong”), and Susan Marshall (“Time and Again”).
Michael Dinallo is the producer behind the project, with Feel Like Going Home: The Songs of Charlie Rich fulfilling a decade long dream for the Boston, Massachusetts-based producer and musician (The Radio Kings). Michael recalled that ‘I’ve wanted to do this for 10 years, ever since I read Peter Guralnick’s Feel Like Going Home and Lost Highway. I love all the music he wrote about but what he wrote about Charlie Rich really stuck with me. I went out and bought every Charlie Rich record I could find. He just grabbed me; it was something very powerful’. Nashville-based Tim Carroll is in the studio with his guitar as part of the backing band for the project. Feel Like Going Home: the Songs of Charlie Rich drew other artists to Memphis as Jim Lauderdale (“Lonely Weekend”) and Will Kimbrough (“Sittin
’ and Thinkin”) headed west from their middle Tennessee home in Nashville to lend vocals and west coast-based Shooter Jennings took the east road from his California home to record “Rebound”.
