Shinyribs (from the album I Got Your Medicine)

Who’s ready to feel better? Can I get a show of hands for anyone ‘tired of watching happy walking in and out the door’? A cure is available, and closer than the corner drug store, as Shinyribs steps up to the microphone to front the band that bears his name, offering to fill your prescription for support and salvation with I Got Your Medicine, his latest album release. Shinyribs, alter ego of Kevin Russell, put the album together alongside co-producer Jimbo Mathus. Adding to the solid groove of the boys in the band, I Got Your Medicine features call and response harmony from the Shiny Soul Sisters and musical accents from the Train Wreck Horns. The album is backed with Country Soul and funky swamp grooves as Shinyribs borrows some mojo from New Orleans’ Ernie K Doe with his tune “A Certain Girl”, offers a warning over a determined rhythm in “Trouble, Trouble”, and rolls out a rocking sway for “Ambulance” to make its way.

Kevin Russell set out his shingle as Shinyribs after the doors closed on the Austin, Texas based group The Gourds following a successful nineteen-year run. He released his debut in 2013 and continues the party with the Rhythm and Blues theme of album number four, I Got Your Medicine. A smirk and a smile are the norm for the songs of the album as it views a chink in the armor of love with “Hands on Your Hips”, turns over all the heart cards in “I Gave Up All I Had”, fills “Don’t Leave It a Lie” with sweet jellyroll, and offers its hand for a slow dance with Toussaint McCall’s “Nothing Takes the Place of You”. Shinyribs bares Southern Soul in the confessions of “I Knew It All Along” and struts down the aisle of salvation with “The Cross is Boss” as I Got Your Medicine picks up as-is love from the bargain bin with “I Don’t Give a Shit”.
